Hey there! If you haven't yet, check out my animation Pig! It is a film I have been working on for a couple of years and it was finished last year. Since then it has screened at a lot of festivals, some of which I have travelled to, and it also picked up some awards.

I'm also very excited to finally release my animation Flower Found! online! I made the film all the way back in 2017 at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht as a graduation project, and it has been screened world wide at over 66 festivals and also toured in North America as part of the Animation Show of Shows. It has won 16 awards and has received acclaim from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter, Animation World Network, among others. You can find all the reviews, awards and selections on my website if you'd like to!

There is also something very Newgrounds about Flower Found! because I first connected with composer Bryan Teoh through enthusiastic comments he was posting on the concept art for the film! He really did an amazing job with the music, the film wouldn't be the same without it! I strongly recommend you check out his work!

Follow me on Instagram to see some behind the scenes stuff from Pig and Flower Found! I'm posting storyboards, concept art, animatics among random other stuff! If anyone is interested I can also make a blog post here detailing the process, let me know in the comments!

Pig meanwhile is still being screened at festivals! Next week I am going on a big trip to South-Korea! Pig will be screened there at the Busan International Kids and Youth Film Festival and I will be travelling in South-Korea and maybe also Japan for a couple of weeks. When I get back I will slowly but surely start working on a new project, possibly an animated web series. Give me a follow if you want to stay up to date!

Hello! I just wanted to share some art that I did for my upcoming film!

This summer I stayed for a month at the Open Workshop in Denmark to work on my new film.

While I was there I made the animatic and also did some concept art. The film will be finished some time next year.

Wow but the pictures contain some spoilers!!

(but by the time I finish this film you will have forgotten all about it)

New short film!
Recently I've started working on a new short film with the working title Varken. For this project I received some funding for pre-production from the Netherlands Film Fund and I'm currently working on the storyboards. You can see some artwork below. I plan to post more updates and artwork for this project throughout the year.

Flower Found!
My film Flower Found! continues to play at several festivals around the world, and it even picked up some awards!

Last year I also travelled to many festivals to present my film, including Annecy, Zagreb, Ottawa and Hiroshima. I also found myself in some odd places like Kosovo and Macau. I took a month long train ride across Europe, visited Japan twice and got attacked by a raccoon in Canada.

Besides the festival screenings Flower Found! is also being distributed by The Animation Show of Shows and can be seen in theatres across the United States. It might screen in your city as well! Check out all the dates here. It plays alongside 15 other wonderful animated short films, 3 of which are Oscar nominated I think. Go check it out if you can!

Because of the distribution deal I cannot release the film online yet, but hopefully I will be able to put it up on Newgrounds at some point.

It also got some nice reviews!
"an allusive pastel nightmare" -The New York Times
"might disturb sensitive children" -The Hollywood Reporter

FluXus Animation Film Festival
I'm organising a small festival featuring animated shorts from all around the world. It will be held on February 16 in Zaandam, The Netherlands. Submit films here! Also check out the poster I made for the festival.

Thanks for reading!!!!

Here's the trailer for my new film Flower Found!

This film was my graduation project at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. The film is almost 7 minutes long and it was animated in TVPaint over the course of about 3 and a half months. I sketched the background layouts digitally which my girlfriend Myra then traced onto paper from my Cintiq and coloured it with paint and crayons.

The wonderful music for the film was composed by SleepFacingWest!

The film recently won Best Animated Student Short at the KLIK Amsterdam Animation Festival!

It'll take a while before I'll upload it to Newgrounds, but hopefully it's coming to a festival near you soon!

Here's a nice review someone wrote:
"This animation has an adorable, cartoonish aesthetic that initially made me expect a completely different kind of story. As it is, it managed to surprise me with its dark humour and biting satire of busybodies who take over a worthy cause and twist it into something unrecognisable and awful. A message for grown-ups slyly delivered with childlike drawings." source

Wow very cool the wall art has a pastry pedestrian in it!

I've been working on a new animation for a while. I've finished more than half the rough animation but it's still a long way from being finished.

Here's what the rough animation looks like:

When it's finished it will look more like this:

and

There's not much more I can show at this point without spoiling too much, but I will post some updates when I've cleaned and coloured the animation!

Follow my new blog on Tumblr and watch a new animated short ever day. Not made by me but films I found online. The main purpose of this blog is to keep track of all these great animations. These films are on different platforms like YouTube, Vimeo and Newgrounds. On Tumblr I can keep them all together in one place and tag them properly. I only embed films in high quality from legitimate sources.

Some animation goldmines I found are The National Film Board of Canada and Soyuzmultfilm. You can watch their output dating back to as far as the 1940s for free. On these channels I found films by Norman McLaren, Paul Driessen, Priit Pärn, Yuri Norstein and many more. Animation schools like Gobelins and The Animation Workshop also have YouTube channels with great student films. I also found work by Don HertzfeldtSylvain Chomet, Nick Park on different YouTube channels.

Most of the classic cartoons from the United States were made for profit so sadly there are almost no films available by studios such as Disney, Fleischer, MGM, UPA or Warner Brothers. But I did found some classic Disney stuff on their official channel and also some of the classic Superman shorts. A lot of these cartoons are in the public domain but it's hard to find high quality uploads of such films on YouTube or Vimeo.

There's also a lot of great animation on Vimeo. Lots of student films but also professional work, the kind of films you can see at animation festivals.

I have made a queue of about 200 films on Tumblr that posts a new film each day. I've also tagged everything with the technique, length, country etc. so it makes it easy to find specific films.

If you don't have a Tumblr there's also a Facebook and a Twitter for you to follow.

If you haven't seen my new film Pedestrian Pastry yet check it out and tell me what you think!

Also be sure to check out my friend Sijbren and his films Stay Positive and Social Fabric! After 3 years of being classmates I've finally persuaded him to upload his work to Newgrounds. We're currently sharing a studio and we're both working on our graduation films.

Below you can see what my film might look like. I'm not sure about a story yet but I've been working on a style for some time now. I'll be sure to post progress updates both here and on my Tumblr. I'm going to submit the film to as many animation festivals as possible and then the film might have it's online premiere here on Newgrounds!

The video below is a little animation exercise I did. I animated an illustration by the French cartoonist Sempé from Patrick Süskinds novella The Story of Mr Sommer. Check it out and if you like it get the book! It's a great read and one of the few books for adults that I know of that has illustrations.

Hey Newgrounds I made a new animation showreel! Please watch it over here:

https://vimeo.com/180491677

This year I will make my art school graduation film. I have no idea what it's going to be about, but I'll keep you updated on this blog here on Newgrounds, and I will eventually also upload it here. Watch my other student films if you haven't seen them yet.

year 1: The Old Harmonium  and The Sheep Shop

year 2: Quacksalver

I also made 15 short animations like the one below, you can watch those here!

I recently made two animations. Check them out if you haven't seen them yet!

Tekkol: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/668137

You Want The Duck: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/668309

The first one, Tekkol, was made in less than 7 hours. I got the basic idea of a "dog bridge" and just made up the rest as I animated along. It was a pretty good challenge and it felt good to do just the opposite from the approach they teach you at art school. I would recommend this exercise to any animator and even if you're not happy with the end result you've probably still learned a lot!

I wasn't sure whether I should upload it like this because it does looks a bit rushed (almost like an animatic) and it left me wondering what it would look like if I spend another day polishing the animation. But I'm very happy with the great response I got on here!

The second animation, You Want The Duck?, was a exercise in character animation and special effects. I also tried some new custom brushes that I made, which is really easy to do in TVPaint. I find drawing with pixels is much easier than drawing with vectors. Now that video is more widely supported than .swf there's no excuse anymore to keep using Flash, and I think more people should give other animation software a try.

At the moment I'm an intern at an animation studio. We make a web series for children on YouTube. I also made my own animation, using their character Morphle. While it is aimed at small children I tried to make it enjoyable for adults too, so have a look if you like!

I hope to do much more short animations like Tekkol this year and share them here with you on Newgrounds. Thanks bye.
